Our clearance
reports alert you to the need for obtaining many types of permission
(e.g. use of music, photos, products, footage). Should you need a
supervisor for the considerable paperwork tracking involved in rights
requests and an experienced negotiator
for them, we recommend the services of Ann Mayall, a trusted colleague
in the clearance industry.
Ann Mayall began in film and television in 1977 apprenticing under
twice Oscar-nominated filmmakers Pen Densham and John Watson at the
original Insight Productions. Before pursing copyright as a specialty,
Ann served in capacities varying from Production Manager to Co-Producer
on over four dozen productions, including "Twist", by critically acclaimed
filmmaker Ron Mann, prime time series for NBC, dramas for HBO, and
a radio show syndicated across Canada. In 1997-98, Ann developed and
co-produced a film on the history of American disc jockeys entitled
"Rock'n'Roll Invaders" for the U.S. based Bravo Network.
Since 1981, Ann has done clearance on over one hundred productions
for virtually every kind of copyright, from music, footage and stills
to plays, text and "likeness" permissions for such legends as Judy
Garland, Julie Andrews, Jimmy Stewart, Johnny Carson and Kermit the
Frog! Ann's particular expertise is in music, having cleared over
a thousand songs from countries all over the world. Particularly challenging
assignments include Ron Mann's films, renowned for their extensive
music soundtracks, and the NFB production "Bollywood Bound", requiring
negotiations with publishers and record companies in India and the
United Arab Emirates.
Over the last year, Ann has been hard at work on a documentary that
requires negotiating
with the SAG, WGA and DGA unions, and getting permissions from every
major cast member in all five incarnations of "Star Trek", including
Leonard Nimoy and Patrick Stewart. Currently, Ann is working on six
productions based out of Calgary, Toronto and Montreal.
Ann also has experience in film distribution (attending at international
film festivals, distributor liaison, press releases), research and
writing (historical & current data, proposal packages), and public
presentations on panels at various film schools and workshops.
